Week 14

I learned how to make very detailed outlines which has definitely been useful in my writing process. This was especially useful when writing lengthy essays such as the Lab Report Analysis essay. When planning my essay, I was able to make my outline based on the structure of the essay which included information about the lab reports. I included the details that I would add for each part of the structure. When the time came to start writing my essay, I pulled information from the outline into my writing, which made up a lot of my essay. This was very useful for many of the assignments I worked on throughout this course.

Week 13

One learning objective is acknowledging mine and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources. This means that I see what is good in the way that others speak or write. Then I try to use this in my own writing. For example, when I am reading an article or just having a conversation with someone, I can take vocabulary or grammar from others, and use it in my own writing and speech.

I have developed this objective in this arena by reading others essays drafts in peer review and outlines in discussions. When I did this, I was able to see where there was excellence in my classmates’ writing. For example, I saw that my classmates had organized the essay in a certain way, so I also organized my essay similar to my classmates.

Week 11

My technical description essay had the purpose of describing a Kenmore Sewing Machine 365 by its parts and subparts. Each part was named and described by their appearance and their function. The connection between the parts was also described which included where the part was on the machine and how a part can affect the function of another part. This essay was made for public view to be seen in my Academic portfolio.

Week 10

I have had experience working in groups prior to this class, in some of my other classes. One of these classes was my macroeconomics class where we were assigned into groups to answer questions together. The group work in this class includes commenting on each other’s discussion posts and peer reviewing each other’s work.  The group work in this class has allowed me to get some advice on how to improve my work and further polish what I have written before writing my final draft.

Week 9

My Lab Report Analysis essay includes an analysis of three lab reports on the effects on sleep quality by different variables. One of these major variables in sleep quality. This analysis is written to compare one lab report with another to see the differences in which they are written. This analysis will be uploaded to my portfolio for this course, where it will be visible to the public for anyone to see.

Week 6 & 7

Something that has helped me in my writing process in this course is making outlines. This has helped me to plan out my essays well due to all the details I am provided with when I create the outline. I would like to spend more time working on my drafts and polishing my work when writing each draft. In a situation where clarification does not occur, I usually have tried to look at the syllabus to get the answer.

Week 5

My Product Review essay described my product of a thermosteel flask and the different factors of it. These factors include the brand of my product, the science behind it, and it’s intended purpose. I also wrote about a criteria to rate the quality of the product. This criteria included the product’s safety, portability, and its durability. This essay is written for the public view and will eventually be posted on my CUNY academic commons portfolio for everyone to see.

Formal Letter of Introduction

Dear Professor Rodwell,

My name is Keeth Perera and I am currently an electrical engineering major at The City College of New York. I am writing you this letter to tell you about what I study as well as my ambitions for my future career. Engineering is a great career path and it allows people to develop unique skills and characteristics. Engineers have an essential role in the world today across many different fields.

I am currently a freshman at City College and I am in my first year of studying engineering. My courses are mostly related to the subjects of math and science such as calculus and physics.  These courses give me the knowledge and skills I need to be a good engineer. I learned more about how the subject of math and science work in the world. More importantly these subjects are helping me to develop my critical thinking and problem solving skills, which I could apply to engineering.

As a college student, I want to be able to work on different projects and get experience in the field before I graduate. I think that hands-on learning is important, especially in a field like this. I plan to work on many projects related to engineering in order to put my knowledge to the test. I also plan on working at internships in positions related to engineering. I think that this will give me the experience I need to be who I want to be in my career. It will also help me to get a sense of what my future career can look like.

After I graduate, I want to work at a job that values my engineering degree. I want  to eventually get a masters degree to further advance in my knowledge. I would like to have successfully finished projects by this time that I would have been working on as an undergraduate student.

There is a lot I could do with my engineering degree. This degree is valuable in many fields, not just engineering. This is because it is known that engineering majors have specific characteristics that make them stand out. This includes the ability to work under pressure, problem solving and critical thinking. There are a variety of fields I could go into with my engineering degree.

With the advances in technology, new discoveries and innovations over the years , engineering is not the same as it was in the past. As people keep discovering more about how different processes work, there are more innovations and more inventions. Their knowledge is constantly developing.  Engineers are constantly designing and improving things to make them better than they already are. They also use their new knowledge to keep making new creations and inventions. The world needs people like engineers for maintaining and creating things. . There are engineers who work in many different fields. These engineers keep fixing problems that exist and are finding solutions for problems that exist.

In conclusion, engineering is an amazing career that offers many opportunities to students like myself. It is a respectable career where these engineers are equipped with unique skills and characteristics. Engineers are a vital part of this world and play an important role in society.

Sincerely,

Keeth Perera

Product Review Essay

My product is a thermosteel bottle which allows the internal temperature of the bottle to be kept constant. This bottle can keep substances within it at very hot or very cold temperatures for many hours. There are many factors that go into making this bottle work such as its design and the engineering behind it. There are different criterias that I will be using to determine if my product is in good quality which include portability, safety, and insulation.

My product is a thermosteel bottle by the brand Milton. The bottle is silver in color, but is made entirely from stainless steel. This bottle uses a plain lid design which means that there are two twistable lids for the bottle that help to keep liquid and heat from escaping the flask. This flask is shaped like a cylinder and has a lid with a round shape at the top. The bottle is able to hold up to 12 ounces and can keep water hot or cold for up to 24 hours.

This bottle is able to keep things at a certain temperature because of the use of insulation. There is a double walled container in the flask that is made of steel. Between these walls there is a vacuum, which prevents heat from escaping the flask. The bottle is made of 100% stainless steel which is rust free and also has strong corrosion resistance from the vacuum between its walls. There is also a copper coating on the inside which allows better heat retention for the bottle.

The concept of a vacuum flask was originally invented in 1892 was used for keeping certain chemicals at a stable temperature. However, the product nowadays serves a different function, which is usually used to keep a variety of liquids and drinks such as milk, water, and juice at the right temperature.

The first criteria I will be using to evaluate the quality of my product is portability. For this bottle to be considered portable it should be easy to carry around and take places. The factors that would allow my product to be portable include weight, size, and temperature. My product is easy to move around and easy to grip as it can be held with a single hand. The outer side is not the same as the temperature inside so you can touch the flask without getting burnt or cold.

Another criteria that would determine the quality of my product would be its safety. This means that the flask, when closed, will not leak or allow anything inside to escape. To meet this criteria, the thermosteel bottle would have to be designed so that it stays shut and secure, preventing any substance from escaping. My bottle has two lids that can close correctly and are not loose and prevents heat or liquids from escaping when closed.

Insulation is another criteria to help me to see the quality of this thermosteel bottle. This criteria is if the inside temperature is kept in the bottle. The product should be able to keep hot drinks hot and cool drinks cool for some time. My product keeps things hot or cold for up to 24 hours. It can even be used to temporarily prevent milk from going bad and keep ice from melting for some time.

An alternate use of this product can be packing certain kinds of foods such as soups, sauces, eggs and even meats. I personally use this thermo bottle when I want to keep a drink hot or cool on the go. This thermo steel bottle is a great way to keep food and drinks at the right temperature. It is easy to bring around, safe and secure and an overall good option for savoring food and drink to have for an extended amount of time.
